
Fixing Those Pesky Cold Spots in Glass Annealing
If you’ve ever worked with flasks, beakers, or any custom labware with weird shapes, you know the struggle. You put them through a standard lehr, but they come out with “cold spots.” It happens because traditional convection heating is basically just blowing hot air. But air is lazy. It doesn’t want to squeeze into tight curves or get deep into a recessed base. That’s where you run into trouble. To fix this, we use short-wave infrared (IR) lamps. The beauty of IR is that it doesn’t care about air movement. It just beams energy straight into the glass. Hitting the right spots We don’t just throw these lamps in randomly. We map out exactly where the glass usually under-heats and angle the IR arrays to hit those dead zones. By positioning them just right, you can warm up the bottom and the sides at the same time. The “short-wave” part is key here. It sinks deeper into the glass wall than the kind of heat you get from a standard heater. This means the core of the glass actually hits the annealing point without you having to torch the outside skin. Power and the “Meltdown” Risk To get enough punch in a small space, we go with high-density quartz tubes. They’re powerful. Really powerful. This gives you the fast ramp-up times you need to keep your cycles moving quickly. But there’s a catch. If you pack these lamps too tight, you’re basically building a toaster. If you aren’t careful, you’ll bake your conveyor belt or warp your rollers. That’s why we’re big on cooling fans. You need to pull that ambient heat away from the machine frame, or you’re just asking for a breakdown. Also, keep an eye on your voltage drop if you’re running long lines. Keeping it Simple Nobody wants to spend their afternoon rewiring a whole zone just because one bulb popped. That’s why we use standard, plug-and-play connectors. When a lamp goes out, your team can just swap the tube and get the line moving again in minutes. One last tip: keep that quartz clean. A little bit of dust or a smudge of oil might not seem like a big deal, but it creates hot spots. And hot spots lead to cracked glass. Not a great way to end the day.
