
Why Your Bathroom Heater Needs “Explosion-Proof” Glass
If you’ve ever put together an infrared heater for a bathroom, you know it’s a brutal environment. You’ve got crazy temperature swings and steam everywhere. Most standard quartz tubes just can’t handle it. They’re prone to thermal shock. Imagine a lamp running at several hundred degrees. Now imagine a single, cold drop of water hitting that surface.**Pop.**That’s how you end up with a shattered tube and a very unhappy customer. That’s why we use explosion-proof quartz.
The battle against the “pop”
Now, quartz is usually pretty good with heat, but it isn’t invincible. In a shower, the temperature difference between the glass and a stray water droplet is massive. It creates this intense, localized stress. If the glass isn’t treated, that tension builds up until the whole thing just gives way. To stop this, we mix specific dopants into the quartz melt. It makes the glass “tougher.” It doesn’t mean it’s unbreakable, but it means if a tiny crack does start, it stays a tiny crack instead of turning into a full-blown burst.
Keeping the water out
These lamps use short-wave infrared, which is great because the heat skips the air and hits you directly. But since these live in the ceiling, the real danger is the seal. If moisture leaks past the end caps and hits the tungsten filament? The lamp is dead. Instantly. To prevent that, we don’t cut corners on the seals. We use high-temp silicone and reinforced crimping to make sure that vacuum stays tight, no matter how humid the room gets.
The honest trade-off
Here’s the thing: you don’t get something for nothing. By adding those toughening agents to the glass, we lose a tiny bit of light transmission. You might see a slight dip in raw heat density compared to pure fused silica. Is it a compromise? Sure. But I’d rather have a lamp that’s 95% as hot and stays in one piece than one that’s 100% hot and explodes in someone’s bathroom. One last tip: make sure your housing has plenty of ventilation. If the heat builds up around the socket, you’ll melt your wiring. And nobody wants that.
