Getting Your Heat Distribution Right for Glass Research
Most quartz lamps are built for one thing: uniform heat. But if you’re in the middle of glass R&D, “uniform” is often exactly what you don’t want. When you’re messing around with new compositions or testing how a piece handles thermal shock, a flat wattage setting just doesn’t cut it. You need specific power density profiles.
It’s More Than Just Size
A lot of suppliers will ask you for the length and the voltage and call it a day. We do things a bit differently. We look at how that wattage actually spreads across the filament. By tweaking the winding pitch and the coil diameter, we can build “hot zones” and “cool zones” right into a single tube. It’s a huge help when you need to simulate a thermal gradient across a sample. Need a sharp heat spike in the center that tapers off toward the edges? We’ll spec the filament to hit that exact curve.
The Nitty-Gritty of Quartz and Heat
We stick with high-purity fused quartz. Why? Because it lets the IR transmission through without fighting it. Less energy gets trapped in the tube wall, which means more heat goes straight into your glass. Depending on what you’re after, you can go with clear quartz for shortwave penetration or a coated version to shift the spectral output. Plus, we offer a few different termination styles. This means the lamps should just drop right into your current rigs without you having to rewire your entire workbench. One heads-up, though: when you cram high power density into a small space, you’re risking a burnout if your voltage jumps around. Use a stabilized power supply. Your filaments will thank you.
Support for Your R&D
Usually, you have to bend your experiment to fit the hardware you’ve got. We’d rather flip that on its head. Just send over the thermal map you need for your material, and we’ll build a lamp that hits those numbers. It saves you from messing around with clunky external masks or huge arrays of lamps that just take up space. Your setup stays clean, your workspace stays open, and your data stays honest.
